A FRESH APPROACH TO RURAL CHURCH
The Potting Shed Church sits within the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham in rural Nottinghamshire, and is part of the Church of England.
As a new and pioneering rural church we enjoy finding creative ways to welcome people and families of all ages and stages of faith. We are excited about the hope that lies at the heart of the Christian faith and the adventure of following Jesus in our day-to-day lives.
Our Sunday worship is informal and family friendly as we seek to encounter God together. We do this through reading the bible, teaching, prayer, sung worship and the creative arts.
We always finish with tea, coffee, cake and a children's tea. This gives us the opportunity to spend time getting to know one another.
We particularly enjoy hosting the Alpha course. Alpha is a space to explore faith, build friendships and ask questions, whilst sharing food together.
In time we will have a flexible building space of our own. Until recently, we have enjoyed the creativity of meeting in a marquee and are now gathering in a local barn until next Summer!
If you’d like to find out more, or ask a question please do get in touch.
We’d love to hear from you!
Our adventure began in 2015 when Bishop Paul Williams shared a vision for a new approach in the way the church connects with individuals, families and young people living in rural communities as part of growing the Diocese Wider, Younger, Deeper. Before long the wheels were in motion for a new, pioneering rural church in mid-county Nottinghamshire.
The church was to be a Resource church, seeking to be a blessing and to ‘give itself away’ as it serves the community alongside established village churches. The church would also hope to share the good news of Jesus with a fresh approach and pattern of meeting together that might fit well with the lives of people and families living in the wider, rural area.
Revd Alison Jones was appointed Pioneer Minister and Revd Ant Dixon Pioneer Curate, and in the Summer of 2017 Alison, Ant and their families moved to the Nottinghamshire area.
The first Gathering, a Commissioning of The Potting Shed, was held on the 10th September 2017 in the Hamlet of Norwell Woodhouse. With hay bales for seats, and a hog roast for all to enjoy together afterwards, The Potting Shed Church was born!
We chose the name ‘The Potting Shed’ as we’re a church in a rural landscape and hope to encourage a culture of hospitality and nurture, whilst seeking fresh ways of being church, and of growth. We hope someday to ‘plant out’ and resource new worshipping communities of our own. But for now we’re enjoying building our team, and getting to know those who are joining in with the vision!
